Chapter Six

Scarlett

Marry me, Scarlett Desoto.”

The words are spoken clearly into my ear, but there’s still a part of me that’s sure I heard him wrong. I turn toward him, my brows knit together as I study his face, half expecting to find a playful smile there.

But he looks as serious as I’ve ever seen him.

“What?” I ask anyway.

“You heard me.”

The baby lets out a loud shriek, bringing me back to reality. I stand hurriedly and grab Damien’s hand, pulling him to his feet beside me. “We’ll be right back,” I announce, not that anyone is really paying any attention to us. No one even seemed to notice our earlier absence. I stomp through the house and out onto the front porch, dragging Damien with me. Once the door shuts, I turn to him.

“You can’t just go around saying things like that,” I hiss.

He smiles at me, seeming amused. “Even if I mean it?”

I run a hand through my hair nervously. “You don’t.”

“I do,” he corrects me. “I’ve never meant anything more in my life.”

He can’t be serious. Maybe once upon a time, the two of us seemed perfect for each other, but he’s been away too long. There’s no denying the chemistry between us, but making out with him is not the same thing as marrying him. I can’t drag him back into this world, not when he’s one of the lucky ones who got out.

“You’re full of shit, West,” I say, rolling my eyes to hide my panic.

His eyes go dark and he backs me up against the house, his big, hard body pressing against mine. “I told you not to call me that.”

“What am I supposed to call you?” I ask, tilting my chin up so as not to cower under his powerful glare.

“Husband.”

A bark of laughter escapes and I push him off of me. “Why me?” I ask, hating how vulnerable I sound but needing to know. “Why now?”

“Because I promised you that I would,” he says.

I shake my head. “Not good enough.”

“And because the only place I feel like I belong is at your side. You and me, Scarlett. It’s supposed to be you and me against the world.”

Ugh. The words tug at something inside of me. It feels like he’s telling the truth, but is it enough? Is this half-assed, spur-of-the-moment proposal enough? It’s certainly not what I imagined the few times I let myself go down this road, but I also never imagined being single at thirty-five or wearing a bustier to work or making out with Damien West in Addison’s bathroom. Maybe he’s just caught up in the moment.

“How do I know you mean it?” I ask. “How do I know you’ll feel the same way tomorrow? How do I know you’ll even still be here tomorrow?”

His mouth twitches into that self-satisfied smirk and he takes a step toward me, wrapping his arms around my waist. “I left you once. I won’t make the same mistake twice. My feelings are what they are, and they’ll be the same tomorrow.
